D. Brian Scarnecchia is the founding President of ISHRI. He is the Chairman of the Department of Humanities and Catholic Social Thought and the Director of the Legal Studies and the Human Life Studies programs at the Franciscan University of Steubenville. He is also Visiting Associate Professor of Law at Ave Maria School of Law. He earned his Masters of Divinity from the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley, CA, and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Akron School of Law. He holds a mandate to teach Theology in accord with the disciplines of Ex Corde Ecclesiae at Franciscan University of Steubenville. Attorney Scarnecchia lectures nationally and internationally on the relation of law, culture, religion, human rights and development. He serves on the board of directors and is legal counsel for the Society of Catholic Social Scientists (SCSS) and is their main non-governmental organization (NGO) representative to the United Nations in New York, Geneva and Vienna. He has authored three books on moral theology and bioethics: With Faith and Reason (2002), The Right to Choose (2003), and Family Matters: Bioethics, Law and Catholic Social Teaching (2009). He is also a practicing attorney in the State of Ohio and has worked as an Assistant County Prosecutor for Jefferson County, Ohio. He and his wife, Victoria, live on a farm in Bloomingdale, Ohio with their six children. His hobbies include hunting, fishing, farming, woodworking and wine-making.
Stephen M. Krason is ISHRI Vice-President of Education and Research. He is Professor and Director of the Political Science Program at Franciscan University of Steubenville. He earned his J.D. and Ph.D. at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He also holds an M.A. in theology-religious education from Gannon University. He joined the Steubenville faculty in 1986. He is admitted to the bars of Massachusetts, Nebraska, the District of Columbia, and certain federal courts including the U.S. Supreme Court. He has authored Abortion: Politics, Morality, and the Constitution; Liberalism, Conservatism, and Catholicism; and Preserving a Good Political Order and a Democratic Republic, and edited or co-edited Parental Rights: The Contemporary Assault on Traditional Liberties, The Recovery of American Education, Catholic Makers of America, We Hold These Truths and More, and Defending the Family: A Sourcebook, The Public Order and the Sacred Order: Reflections on Contemporary Socio-Political Problems and Prospects, in Light of Catholic Social Teaching, Philosophy, and the American Political Tradition. He also has authored numerous articles, book chapters, and book reviews. He was co-founder of the Society of Catholic Social Scientists (SCSS) and has been its national President since its inception in 1992. In that capacity, he is also Publisher of The Catholic Social Science Review.
Terrence McKeegan is ISHRI Vice-President of International Activities and Liaison. He is the Vice President and Senior Counsel for the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (C-FAM), and is the director of their New York office. He was formerly Counsel for the European Centre for Law and Justice (ECLJ), based in Strasbourg, for whom he covered UN and international legal issues He earned his J.D. at Ave Maria School of Law and his B.A. at Franciscan University of Steubenville. A former assistant prosecuting attorney, he is an adjunct faculty member in the legal studies department at Franciscan University, and teaches courses on human rights. Mr. McKeegan worked as a legal intern for the ECLJ in Strasbourg, and as a research assistant for Dana Rosemary Scallon, former Member of the European Parliament for Ireland. In addition to studying international human rights and comparative health law in Rome, he has studied in Austria and worked in Ireland. He has lobbied at the European Parliament, the United Nations, and on Capitol Hill. Many of his legal writings on human rights and international law have been submitted to the United Nations and he has addressed the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on human rights issues. He has presented at academic conferences in the U.S., and lectured internationally in East Timor, the Philippines, Austria, and Ireland. Currently, Attorney McKeegan sits on the Board of Directors or Advisors of several organizations and provides pro bono counsel to several organizations and individuals. He is admitted to the District of Columbia Bar.
